Southeastern Trail Series Race 3 - Memorial Day Trail Race will be held on Saturday, May 23 at Oak Mountain State Park. The start and finish will be at the Redbud Pavilion on Tranquility Road, Location of the BMX Track. Turn off Findley Dr. at mile post 4. Redbud is the first pavilion on your right. (Map from Mountain High Outfitters Store on Hwy 280 to Redbud Pavilion.) The race route will follow the Yellow Trail (same route as the Tranquility Run) for about 1.5 miles to the intersection with the White Trail. If you reach the creek at Maggie's Glen, you went too far. Runners will make a sharp right onto the White trail for the long climb up the crest of Double Oak Mtn. The first 100 yards of the white trial climbs steeply then becomes less steep but quite rocky for a short distance before runners starts the long steady but runnable ascent to Shackleford Ridge.
Stay on the White Trail and climb past three distinct rock steps, (outcroppings) along the ridge for about 0.5 miles to another steep climb up to Shackleford Point, the highest point in the park. Just past Shackleford point runners will reach a "Y" where the Orange Trail angles to the left, down hill and the White Trial continues along the ridgeline straight ahead. Stay on the White Trail for a little over a mile to the Yellow/White Connector. Watch for the signs directing you to the right. Make another sharp right onto the connector trail and down the mountain on a steep, rocky trail. Shortly after leaving the white trail, runners will cross a new bike trail. Ignore the trail and continue on the Yellow/White Connector. Follow the Yellow/White Connector all the way down to the Bike Road, (Red Trail) the Road up to Camp Tranquility. Turn left along the gravel road for about 100 yards then back right onto the Yellow Trail. Stay on the Yellow trail over rolling hills to the start/finish.
The course is a 6.21 mile loop. Arrive ready for some hills. The climb up the White Trail to Shackleford Point is over 600 ft. The descent from the White Trail to the Yellow Trail (Yellow-White Connector) is 710 ft. Total elevation gain is 1,219 feet for the 6 mile and 2,438 for the 12 mile race.
