Birmingham Track Club Race - Free to all BTC members only - Presented by Southeastern Runs
Join us on Saturday, September 7th, for three trail races at Oak Mountain State Park. All races will start at 8:00 a.m. at the Redbud Pavilion. This is the pavilion near the BMX track. This race is Free to all BTC members and you must be a member to enter. There will be three race distances. The first race will be a little over 4 miles with gentle hills and no technical terrain except, perhaps, the 100 ft. section of trail going up the dam on the Yellow Trail. The second race will be 8.15 miles long and climb to the top of Double Oak Mountain before returning to the Finish. The third option, the long, HARD race will follow the same route as the second race to the top of Double Oak Mtn where it will split off and head to Peavine Falls. The run will leave the falls and cross the park to the north end continuing to the "Kings Chair" Overlook and "Eagle Nest" Overlook before heading back to the Redbud and the finish. This run will be 14.35 miles.
First 200 registered runners will receive technical race shirts. Following the race there will be a cookout with burgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs and all the "fixin's." We will also have the usual post ultra trail race refreshments on Ice, so plan on hanging around a while. This race is not part of the Southeastern Trail Series. There will be awards for the top three male and female runners in each race.
The Short Race: This race will be a 4+ mile race starting at the pavilion and circling Tranquility Lake on the Yellow Trail then heading back to Maggie's Glen. At Maggie's runners will switch to the Red/Yellow Connector Trail and head over to the Red Trail, turn left and run back down to the North Trail Head. We will have an aid station set up at the trail head with water, Heed, Hammer Gels, chips, cookies sandwiches and other snacks. You will then take the White Trail back to Maggie's and follow the Yellow trail back to the start. The Middle Distance Race: This middle distance race will be about 8.15 miles. Runners will follow the Yellow Trail to long climb up to the top of Double Oak Mountain on the Yellow/White connector trail. At the White Trail you will make a left and follow it over to the Orange Trail. Take the Orange Trail down to the Red Bike Road where you will go left all the way down to the aid station at the North Trail Head. From there, take the white trail back to Maggie's Glen and go right on the Yellow Trail back to the finish. The Long Race: This race is 14.35 miles. Runners will follow the Yellow Trail to the long climb up the Yellow/White Connector to the top of Double Oak Mountain, same as the Middle Distance Race. At the white trail you will turn right and go about 200 feet down to the Red Bike Road and turn heading southwest. Follow the Red Road to the Green Trail heading over to Peavine Falls. This will be the location of the first an aid station. Leave the aid station and head up the Green Trail to the Green/White Connector and turn left on the steep descent down to Upper Peavine Creek where you will go right on the White Trail for a few 100 feet. At the bridge over the creek to the falls, turn left and head down to the bottom of the falls. Follow the trail along the creek below the falls down along the creek to the Blue Trail Connector that climbs back out of the gorge. At the Blue Trail continue straight (do not turn left) and follow the Blue Trail 5.5 miles to the far north end of the park. At the cables directing you down the mountain to the North Trail Head go around the cables (Stay on the ridge, do not go down the mountain.) and follow the signs and flagging back to Kings Chair Overlook, about 1/2 mile. At the overlook, find the hole punch and punch your Bib Number, and head back to the Blue Trail. At the cables, go right down the mountain toward the north trail head. At the Eagle Nest Overlook trail (about 1/2 mile) turn right and climb the steep hill to the overlook and on past the overlook to the crest of the hill. There you will find another punch and again punch your bib and head back down to the Blue Tail. Turn right and continue down for about 200 ft. where you will switch to the Red/Blue connector down to the Red Bike road. At the road, turn right and continue down the to the North Trail Head and the second aid station. From there you will follow the white trail back to Maggie's Glen. Go right over the bridge where you will be on the Yellow and White trail for a few 100 feet before they split. Continue straight on the Yellow Trail all the way to the finish.
Please Note: From the aid station at the Peavine Falls trail it is probably 8 or 9 miles to the next aid station at the North Trail Head.
